This area surrounding Sawmill Creek Road is still mostly uncleared timberland that includes a wildlife refuge, although in the 1970's it was the object of fierce debate between international industrial giant BASF and a staunch group of environmentalists. BASF had purchased the land with the intention of building a chemical facility on the pristine Colleton River, including a shipping port that would have contributed to wide scale pollution. When the balance of opinion turned in favor of conservation, the riverfront was sold to the state and Beaufort County. There is now a county boat landing and launch on the Colleton, along with the state-owned Waddell Mariculture Center, a DNR research facility that studies fish and shellfish, as well as providing several species of fish and shrimp for restocking depleted waters.There are a few sandy roads running off Sawmill Creek Road, with homes ranging from spartan to spectacular. Several larger parcels have personal stables. There is no POA and there are no community-owned amenities.
